It started with a $5.00 purchase from Coles.
Measure the length that you need and cut the top off it.
(I don’t have to hem it as I am using the existing hem.)
For Eryn the length I needed to cut was just under the arm.
Fold over the top to make a casing for the elastic and sew (leaving an opening to thread the elastic later).
Using elastic thread, I shirred the top.
Thread the elastic through the casing at the top, making sure it’s tight enough so it doesn’t fall down.
Sew elastic together, then sew close the opening.
To make the tie for around the neck.
(This is technically not a tie, it’s one piece sewn to both sides of the front that you can slip over your head)
I cut a long strip from one arm piece.
Cut that piece in half length ways using the existing seam line.
Fold the fabric in half and iron.
(please please ignore my dirty old ironing board cover
)
Then fold to the centre crease on both sides and iron.
Then fold in half again.
Sew along edge to make the tie.
Try the dress on and position the tie where you think it looks right. I always just eyeball this part.
Pin and sew in place.
That’s it.
Add a little accessory to add that little something extra.
